Exploring China’s peripheries: Southwest 西南
// Day 4: Dali 大理市 county-level city
Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture 大理白族自治州, Yunnan province
by WanderingChina
Dali is an ancient capital where its old city walls still stand. Not UNESCO protected like Lijiang, it was the seat of power for the Bai kingdom Nanzhao which thrived during the eight and ninth centuries. Later, the Kingdom of Dali regined from 937-1253AD. Dali was formerly a significantly Muslim part of South China.

Btw, WanderingChina, I visited 聚影池 some time ago too. Loved Dali!
Picture #8 struck me. Did you notice how murky the water is the women were washing the vegetables in? I wonder how much of a shortage of clean water is in China.

Hi YinYang, yes it was rather dirty to be honest. Yunnan has the highest rate of water poisoning in China – but then again providing infrastructure in such difficult terrain was always going to be a feat.

Btw, thanks for sharing these pictures. Where are you headed next? I just went back to my old pictures and found this – taken back in 2002 – so it’s been a while for me.

Wow – wonderful shot – alas the limitations of iPad photography! Finally done with the travels – I have updates from Sichuan’s Chengdu followed by Chongqing municipality to follow. Up next for the next trip would be the autonomous regions, starting with Tibet.
